Today, I wanted to show how the CheaperChicer&Uniquer lifestyle applies not just to clothes, but to food, too! (And almost everything else, for that matter.)
You can get oatmeal with fruit and sweeteners from McDonald’s for $1.99, but did you know you can make a just-as-tasty but infinitely more customizable version for just $0.91? That means you can make twice as much oatmeal for the price!
1/2 cup quick oats (mine were GreatValue brand): 20cents
1 small Granny Smith apple (mine were bagged): 32cents
1/4 cup raisins (mine were GreatValue): 29cents
a sprinkle each of allspice and ginger, about 10cents total
Time: 5 minutes
Put 1/2cup oats and water just enough to show through the oats a bit in a regular bowl. Add a sprinkle each of allspice and ginger, but you can adjust the amount and type of spice to taste. Cinnamon and nutmeg also taste good.
Heat for 1 minute 30 seconds in microwave.
While heating, wash Granny Smith apple. Cut into small, about 1/4-1/8inch chunks.
Add more water to oatmeal once it’s done cooking, about an inch of water above the oats if you like thick oatmeal, an inch and a half if you like loose oatmeal. Heat again for 1 minute 30 seconds.
Once oats are done, spread apple chunks on a plate and heat for 1 minute 30 seconds in microwave, or until soft and easy to poke through with a fork.
Add raisins and apples to oats, as well as sweetener if desired, and stir to combine.
Anddddd that’s all! You can chop and add bananas or other fruits or berries, too, if you want, but you don’t need to.
Now you’ve saved money, made a healthier and fresher dish, and you can feel awesome about eating a home cooked meal! Best enjoyed with copious amounts of bragging to friends about your Cooking Skillz.
